Cinematographic Research

Definition of cinematography
Cinematography is all about the camera angles that have been used within a film and how they follow the main characters in the film with the camera e.g. panning and tracking. It is all about why they use those angles and how it effects and gives characters status within the film.

When looking at the opening titles to insidious the first camera shot used is a low angle looking down on a child in bed and then it switches to a point of view look which is where you look thought someones eyes and this shot goes around the house till we see a ghostly figurer with a candle which is placed in the centre of the screen which shows the ghost has power and is an important player in the film.. After that it then starts fading in and out of the different rooms of the house and it also zooms in and out at the same time. It cross cuts between each image to add effect.

When looking at the opening titles of the film under world it uses a lot of mid and close up shots of characters and scenes. The camera shots are focused for awhile but then go out of focus when is comes to switching to another scene. In this scene of the opening titles the blades are out of focus while the protagonist is in the centre and in focus which shows us as an audience that she has power and it also makes us as an audience focus on her which tells us she is the main character. When looking at the opening titles of underworld the very first cinematography technique used is tracking the protagonist from behind and this gives us as an audience the feel of suspense that the protagonist  will be feeling when she walks through the room.

conclusion
From looking at cinematography techniques i now know what all the different shots are for and how they are used. This means that for when i start making my opening film titles i know what kind of shots i can use to insure that my opening titles look professional and can be the best it can be. It also means i know what shot should be used when and not to use them in a random order. I now know what shots should be used when it comes to distance shots e.g. long shots, extreme long shots, mid shots, close ups and extreme close ups.
